30 Aug – 1 Sept 2024. Moseley Park, Birmingham.

Every year we take great pleasure in selecting a wide variety of musicians to welcome to Moseley Park, from promising young acts just starting out on their journey to music legends with a fair few miles already on the clock. One such group joining us this year is our Friday night headliner Squeeze, and with 48 years of experience writing, recording and selling out tours around the world, we can’t wait to see them step onto the main stage and show us exactly what it takes to make such a long-lasting impact on the UK’s music scene.

Having formed back in 1973 in London, Squeeze had a quick rise to fame with their distinctive blend of new wave, rock and a large pinch of pop, and their position as one of the UK’s most-loved bands was fully cemented by the 1979 album Cool For Cats. Amongst the hooky melodies and amusing lyrics, Squeeze have continued to paint a portrait of the ever-shifting British social landscape spanning the decades, with many songs rooted in council estates, social divides, addictions and day-to-day life, love and loss. Lead singer Glenn Tillbrook admits that he hasn’t always been as switched on politically as he’d liked to have been, but it seems he’s making up for lost time. When performing live on the Andrew Marr show a few years ago in front of then Prime Minister David Cameron, Tillbrook spontaneously updated the lyrics to one of their songs to criticise the destruction of the welfare state. And it’s not all talk either – in 2022, the band released a new EP and single ‘Food For Thought’ that drew attention to the poverty crisis enveloping the UK and donating all the proceeds from their sales to independent food banks around the UK.

The decades have brought break-ups and reconfigurations for the band, but Chris Difford and Glenn Tillbrook have remained at the helm, weathering every storm and coming back fighting. Despite Squeeze disbanding in 1999, the two musicians continued to make music together, as well as work on solo projects, both to great critical acclaim. However, Squeeze was never really gone for good, they were just lying in wait for the right time to emerge once more, all the while inspiring much-loved contemporary acts such as Kasabian, Lily Allen, Supergrass and Mark Ronson with their evergreen songs. If you look closely, you can see Squeeze’s fingerprints littered all over the fabric of British music.

And re-emerge they did! Lucky for us…and with their most able line-up to date. With so many hits to their name and such an illustrious, enduring musical legacy, we feel very honoured to have them on our doorstep this Summer. They’ll be completing one of our biggest lineups to date, along with the likes of Graham Nash, The Saw Doctors, Wilco and The Proclaimers. No surprise that tickets are flying out…get yours now, and we’ll see you by the lake.
